Mrs. MacInnes, 4th grade at Pond Cove Elementary in Cape Elizabeth, Maine took 2nd place with their collaborative story “A True Hero”. Mrs. P also decided to make this story into a video as well because of the enduring and important message that everyday acts of kindness can make you a hero.

Sonya Smith’s 4th grade from the Collegiate School in Henrico, VA received 4th place with their story "The Amazing Misadventures of Super Clyde”, and Shannon Berghoff’s 4th grade at South Elementary in Jackson, MO rounded out the top 5 winners with a collaborative project, “The Adventures of Jake the Shapeshifter and Arrowhead Girl”.

The theme for the contest this year was the word heroes. It brought a lot of very creative entries from K-4 schools across the country. In fact this year 40% of the entries were illustrated. TX, MO and VA brought the most entries from their states. 10 states are being honored in this years contest.

The grand prize was chosen by a panel of celebrity judges that included Mia Wenjen, creator of the Pragmatic Mom blog and author; Colby Sharp, teacher and author co-founder of the Nerdy Book Club; and Mrs. P (T.V. Actress Kathy Kinney).

The winning story will be professionally illustrated by Robin Robinson and read by Mrs. P on her storytime YouTube Channel. It will premiere in early March so everyone can enjoy it.

The winning classroom will be filled with actual books, audio books and digital books thanks to the sponsors of the contest: Mackin Educational Resources will provide a $500 gift certificate and audiobook company Tales2GO will provide a classroom valued at $250. Buncee will provide a plus subscription.

The annual Be-a-Famous Writer contest is an opportunity for K-4 classrooms to spark their imaginations. The contest is for classrooms only and is FREE to enter. One story per classroom is permitted and it can be a collaborative story, or teachers can have the class vote on which child's story to enter, but either way it's the whole classroom that wins. Every year a new theme is selected for the contest. Stories submitted are no less than 250 words and are not to exceed 1,000.  Some of the things considered in the winning selections are: Originality, creativity, compelling narrative, humor, sense of adventure and the development of a theme or point of view.
